The road
The M2 south past Khor Virap and Areni, over the Vorotan pass (about 2,300 m) to Goris, then the winding road through Syunik to Kapan.
Worth stopping
- Noravank (a 15-minute detour from Areni).
- Tatev and the Wings of Tatev ropeway — a long detour, better as its own day.

- In winter the Vorotan pass can be snowy; cars run on winter tyres and we allow extra time.
